Is 19 litres enough for a sidecountry or quick backcountry lap?
Yes. Jones designed the Deeper specifically for sidecountry and quick tours: avy tools, water, a snack, and a layer. Dedicated avy tool slots and a zippered interior keep gear organized within the compact volume. It's not the right pick for all-day objectives: use the Further 25L or Higher 32L for those.
Does the Deeper carry a splitboard or skis on the skin track?
Yes. It has vertical board carry straps for standard splitboard carry and an A-frame split-ski carry mode for carrying the halves like skis when terrain demands it. An ice axe loop is also included for mixed objectives.
Is there room for my avy beacon, shovel, and probe?
Yes. The Deeper has dedicated avy tools slots and a zippered internal pocket for avy gear. An integrated safety whistle is built into the harness. Even at 19 litres, avalanche safety is clearly built into the design: it's a sidecountry pack, not a ski resort day bag.
What's missing compared to the Further 25L?
The Deeper has no hip belt pockets and no back panel cargo access, both found on the Further and Higher. It also skips the dual ice axe loops of the larger models (the Deeper has one loop). It's a streamlined, lighter pack purpose-built for quick objectives, not extended all-day touring.
Can I carry a water reservoir in the Deeper?
Yes. The Deeper has a hydro pocket with an insulated sleeve for a reservoir. The insulation helps keep water from freezing during cold approaches. Basic but sufficient for sidecountry laps and quick tours where you're not out for hours.
