Steep Vario Jr Ski Poles - Pink/Pansy FAQ
What age or size kid is this pole actually made for?
The Steep Vario Jr is sized for junior freeskiers, with an adjustable shaft ranging from 80 to 110 cm in 5 cm increments. The grip is a 4-finger junior design and the strap is junior-sized too, so it fits kids who haven't grown into adult gear yet but are already exploring freeride terrain.
How do you adjust the length, and does it stay locked when you ski?
The Steep Vario Jr uses an adjustable aluminum shaft (16 mm diameter) that telescopes across the 80-110 cm range. The adjustment system is not named in the catalogue, but the pole is designed to hold its set length during skiing. Exact locking mechanism details are not specified.
Will the basket hold up in deeper or heavier snow?
The Steep Vario Jr comes with an Interchangeable Junior basket, designed for freeride use rather than groomed runs only. The basket is swappable if you need a different size for specific conditions, which is a practical feature for junior riders moving between resort and off-piste terrain.
Is this pole durable enough for a kid who skis hard and falls a lot?
The shaft is aluminum (Alu 16mm), which handles the knocks and drops that come with junior freeskiing better than carbon at this price point. At 180 g per pole, it's light enough for smaller riders without sacrificing the build that the STEEP freeride franchise demands.
Is this a good first adjustable freeride pole, or is it just a basic kids' pole?
It's part of Salomon's STEEP franchise, the same family as the adult freeride poles, so the intent is a genuine junior freeride pole rather than a generic starter. The interchangeable basket and adjustable shaft make it practical for kids in a growth phase who are already exploring off-piste or varied terrain.
